Let’s dive in.
Markets continued to slump today on escalating violence in the Middle East and weaker-than-expected U.S. jobs data. Total market cap dipped to $2.4 trillion, while BTC fell below $69K again, and ETH is back below $2K.
The native token of BNB Chain-based prediction market Opinion, OPN, just launched yesterday and is down 8% in the past 24 hours, trading near $0.32.
Meanwhile, OKB — originally launched by centralized exchange OKX — was yesterday’s top performer after the parent company of the NYSE announced it had made a strategic investment in the CEX giant, valuing it at $25 billion.
The move marks a major moment for OKX’s brand footprint outside of Asia. Like Binance, OKX is one of the major global CEXs whose founding team is originally from China. The firm has made a concerted, and arguably very successful, effort to expand its presence beyond Asia in recent years, and — even more recently — acquire licenses to officially operate in various global jurisdictions. But the OKX brand only recently began officially operating in the U.S. as a regulated entity.
For several years, it was OKX’s sister company, Okcoin, which was launched four years earlier, in 2013, that served U.S. traders, officially operating independently from OKX, though the two shared plenty beyond their founder. The corporate structure in place was something more akin to Binance U.S. vs. Binance’s global platform, before Okcoin and OKX merged under one brand in 2023.
With all the convoluted corporate structures and regulatory shifts going on in the background for basically all of OKX’s life, this investment + partnership deal from Intercontinental Exchange goes far beyond a cash injection or even a multi-billion-dollar valuation in establishing OKX’s place as a regulated, trusted platform for a mainstream global user base.
Like many other big crypto firms — in a move first popularized by the now defunct and notorious FTX — OKX first tried to establish mainstream brand recognition and trust via splashy sponsorships with famous sports teams, including Manchester City and McLaren Racing.

But, while logos on race cars and jerseys are — even if its mostly in a subliminal way — a) big for brand recognition b) an important milestone for crypto, seen by millions and placed next to tech giants like Google, yesterday’s move is arguably way bigger and marks a major shift.
Instead of simply agreeing to take money from OKX (of course, sports sponsors are vetted, but ultimately, the teams are the ones receiving cash in the deal), this is a huge TradFi player investing its money — reportedly in the hundreds of millions — taking a seat on OKX’s board, and agreeing to licensing and joint product launches.
It remains to be seen how this massive vote of confidence from U.S. TradFi will play out for the CEX, but it is likely hugely important for OKX’s future, as it struggles to be seen from behind Binance’s very large global shadow.
