Binance Founder CZ ‘Doxxes’ His Dog and Sparks Memecoin Frenzy

Binance founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao has sparked a meme token explosion.

Zhao announced the idea of “doxxing” his dog “for the cause” on Feb. 12. In a Feb. 13 X post, Zhao said that he would post a picture of his dog and reveal its name at 11 a.m. EST. True to his word, he revealed that the Belgian Malinois is named Broccoli.

Broccoli has inspired a flurry of memecoins, which was the point of the exercise.

Several contenders emerged as developers rushed to create tokens, but the largest on BNB chain has a market cap of around $75 million with roughly $5 million of liquidity, according to DEX Screener.

Zhao himself will potentially crown the winner of the Broccoli battle, as he has said he was “likely” to interact with a couple of the top memecoins on the BNB chain, which will give them a huge boost.

Beyond that, Zhao said the “BNB Foundation may provide rewards for the top memes on the BNB Chain, giving LP [liquidity provider] support or other rewards. The details are still being discussed. More to come.”

Zhao added very clearly, in several posts, that he is “NOT” going to issue an official Broccoli coin himself.

About Broccoli

Broccoli himself was a gift from a friend who owns a zoo in Dubai, Zhao said.

In a nod to Binance, Zhao said he wanted a name that began with B and “and has some green in it, so I named him Broccoli. It also has a blocky sound, as in blockiichain. Can't get away from crypto, haha.”

He recalled toilet training the dog and attempting to socialize it, buying a bike to “walk” the energetic dog, and that it remembered him after his four-month-long stint in U.S. federal prison over Binance’s long failure to implement an anti-money-laundering policy until several years ago.

“If you had asked me before last night, I would never have imagined that Broccoli would be part of the blockchain ecosystem. But here we are. There is never a dull day in crypto,” Zhao said.

Launching a Memecoin

The entire meme creation process started on Feb 12, when Zhao, describing himself as a “newbie” to the meme creation process, asked how to go about it after people began asking about his dog on X.

The affair mirrors the accidental creation of the TST memecoin on the BNB chain last week. That happened after a BNB Chain educator created the token as an example in a video titled “How to launch a memecoin on BNB Chain.”

After it got some traction as a memecoin, Zhao posted on X about the “tricky” situation and warned that it was not an official BNB memecoin, which caused its market cap to explode to $300 million before coming back down to its current $132 million.
