Gaming operating system Playtron is launching a new programmable stablecoin, Game Dollar, in order to power purchases, subscriptions and rewards in its gaming ecosystem.

Built on the Layer 1 (L1) Sui blockchain, Playtron said in a release shared with the Defiant that Game Dollar is “intended to create a neutral, programmable financial layer across games and gaming marketplaces, offering a seamless, consistent experience for payments and rewards.”

The stablecoin will also be used for payments and rewards on the SuiPlay0X1, a handheld gaming device that will support a wide range of games including console, mobile and PC games, as well as web3 games developed within the Sui ecosystem. SuiPlay0X1’s developers said that it has pre-sold all 10,000 units in the initial run.

Game Dollar is built on stablecoin platform M0, which supports application-specific stablecoins built on EVM-compatible chains, as well as Solana, the company said. Game Dollar will be backed by U.S. treasuries, including tokenized treasuries, an M0 representative told The Defiant.

“Game Dollar is exactly the kind of innovation M0 was built to support — programmable, interoperable, and designed for real utility,” said Gregory Di Prisco, cofounder and chief architect at M0, in an email to The Defiant:

“By embedding a stablecoin directly into the heart of gaming infrastructure, Playtron is unlocking a new economic layer that’s long overdue. We see this as the start of stablecoins expanding far beyond DeFi into the applications that define daily digital life.”

The goal is to make stablecoins “a financial backbone for the $500 billion global gaming economy,” said Kirt McMaster, cofounder and CEO of Playtron, in the release, adding: “Game Dollar will unlock new economic models for developers and marketplaces while enabling consumer incentives only possible via programmable dollars.”
