Tether Freezes USDT Tied to $90M in Ledger Thefts
The same blacklist caught four THORChain vaults for three hours.

gm, Defiers!
These are the biggest stories in DeFi and crypto:
- Tether froze USDT tied to the Ledger reseller thefts, with reported losses near $90 million
- Tether blacklisted four THORChain vaults for three hours, then released 1.45 million USDT
- Mashinsky took a lifetime industry ban and up to $35 million in conditional payments
- CFTC carved licensed sportsbook and casino wagers out of the federal swap definition
- Solana finished its slot-time cut to 200 milliseconds, shortening leader windows to 800 milliseconds
Four THORChain vault addresses went onto Tether’s Tron blacklist on Friday morning and came off about three hours later, with roughly 1.45 million USDT still sitting inside them. THORChain’s technical co-founder found out the way everyone else did, by reading the contract’s event log. He got no call before it happened and no explanation after it was undone.
Tether reached for the same key twice on Friday, in opposite directions. It froze USDT at addresses tied to the thefts hitting Ledger customers, where onchain tracker MistTrack puts reported losses near $90 million and Ledger has asked reseller CryptoBilis to stop shipping devices. Hours earlier the same blacklist caught four of THORChain’s Tron vaults, pausing Tron swaps, deposits and signing for a protocol that had been promoting that exact route three days before.
The THORChain addresses were part of a sweep that blacklisted 35 Tron addresses holding about 10.9 million USDT. Nineteen of them are still frozen. That sweep lands in the middle of an active argument about who gets to appeal: Conduit sued Tether this week over $2.76 million in frozen USDT, a separate suit says Tether froze $42.4 million three months before a seizure warrant existed, and Tether said in September it had helped freeze nearly $550 million in Iran-linked USDT. The company has published no standard for any of it.
The mechanism is a single owner address on the USDT contract. Adding a wallet takes one transaction and no notice. Removing it took a founder posting about the freeze in public, which is the appeals process as it currently exists. That dependency keeps widening: Polkadot launched dotUSD backed by USDT under OpenGov on Thursday, putting a chain-governed stablecoin on top of a reserve asset its governance cannot unfreeze.
The 19 Tron addresses still on the list from Friday’s sweep have no founder posting on their behalf. But Ledger’s victims are better off for Friday’s freeze.

Tether Freezes USDT Linked to Ledger User Thefts, MistTrack Says
Tether has frozen USDT at addresses tied to thefts hitting Ledger users, onchain tracker MistTrack said Oct. 9, putting reported losses near $90 million. Tron records confirm one blacklisted address holding 500,000 USDT, funded from a wallet on MistTrack’s list. MistTrack gave no total frozen and no chain-by-chain split. A freeze stops the tokens moving. It does not pay anyone back. Tether has frozen and later reissued USDT alongside law enforcement before, and no distribution to victims has been announced.
Tether Freezes USDT Linked to Ledger User Thefts, MistTrack Says
MistTrack reports USDT freezes linked to Ledger user thefts and losses nearing $90 million. TRON records confirm a blacklist action against a funded address.

Why this matters: The money only returns if Tether chooses to reissue it, and victims are now waiting on a company’s discretion with no process to appeal to.

Tether Unfreezes Four THORChain Vaults Three Hours After Blacklisting 1.45 Million USDT
Tether blacklisted four THORChain vault addresses on Tron Friday, then removed them about three hours later, releasing roughly 1.45 million USDT. The balances were untouched. THORChain halted Tron trading, deposits and signing while the vaults were restricted, and has restarted all three. The same sweep hit 35 Tron addresses holding about 10.9 million USDT; 19 of the others are still frozen. Technical co-founder Chad Barraford said THORChain got no advance notice and no reason. Tether has not commented.
Why this matters: A stablecoin issuer paused a chain’s entire Tron route on its own authority, and THORChain’s only available recourse was posting about it in public.

Mashinsky Accepts Lifetime Industry Ban and Up to $35 Million in Conditional Payments
Alex Mashinsky, the former Celsius CEO, agreed to a permanent ban from the securities, commodities and crypto industries, New York Attorney General Letitia James said Friday. The Oct. 8 settlement carries up to $35 million in conditional payments. A $25 million damages judgment clears if he pays $10 million under his federal forfeiture order. A separate $10 million judgment clears when he finishes his 12-year sentence. He admitted misleading statements about Celsius’s regulatory standing and his own CEL sales.
Why this matters: Both halves of the $35 million are satisfiable by things Mashinsky is already obligated to do, so New York may collect none of it.
REGULATION
CFTC Excludes Casino-Style Wagers From Swap Definition
The CFTC adopted an interim final rule on Oct. 9 excluding licensed casino games and sportsbook wagers from the federal swap definition. The provider has to be licensed under state or tribal law, and the trade has to stay off an exchange or swap execution facility. A sportsbook taking the other side of a house wager qualifies. An exchange-traded event contract does not. The agency skipped notice and comment, citing court rulings and state enforcement that threaten prediction markets. Comments close 30 days after publication.
Why this matters: The CFTC just drew the line Kalshi’s opponents said could not be drawn, weeks after the Ninth Circuit called that same distinction one without a difference.

Solana Schedules Final Cut to 200-Millisecond Slots
Solana cut its target slot time to 200 milliseconds on Friday, finishing a staged reduction from 400 milliseconds that began Aug. 21. Anza expected the change at epoch 1053, around 11 a.m. ET. Per-slot compute limits shrink in proportion, so capacity per second stays about the same. Validators still get four leader slots, now 800 milliseconds total, down from a full second. The recent-blockhash window falls from about 38 seconds to about 30.
Why this matters: Wallets and signing tools lose roughly eight seconds of validity per transaction, and hardware and multisig approval flows are the ones that will feel it.
