TON Taps Axelar For First Cross-Chain Interoperability Infrastructure

The Open Network (TON) is moving to support cross-chain interoperability for the first time.
On Oct. 16, TON announced it will soon integrate Axelar’s permissionless Mobius Development Stack (MDS) to enable cross-chain connectivity.
The move will connect TON’s ecosystem with 68 different blockchains, including Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible networks, Cosmos, and Polkadot.
Any TON dApp will be able to connect with networks supported by MDS. The stack supports interchain token transfers, bypassing the liquidity fragmentation associated with cross-chain bridges.
“This integration aims to boost TON’s scalability and drive new opportunities for mass adoption, while Web3 applications across the ecosystem gear up to leverage these advancements,” TON said.
TON has enjoyed explosive growth over the past year following its integration with Telegram, the popular messaging app, in September 2023. The move allowed Telegram users to interact with TON, including wallet integrations and support for Toncoin transactions within the app.
The total value locked (TVL) on TON has exploded 4,451% to $750.9 million from $16.5 million on Oct. 1, 2023, according to DeFi Llama.
The price of Toncoin is up 1% over the past 24 hours, according to The Defiant’s crypto price feeds.
TON unveils game distribution platform
The news comes one day after TON announced TON Station, an upcoming gaming-focused distribution platform.
TON said TON Station also seeks to comprise a SocialFi platform hosting seasonal content, token farming, and other user rewards. TON Station is under development in partnership with the web3 gaming projects Superverse and Sidus Heroes.
