Exploring Polkadot’s Parachain Ecosystem

Exploring Polkadot’s Parachain Ecosystem

Polkadot boasts a unique ecosystem made up of a base layer, called the Relay chain, which provides security for many sovereign blockchains, called parachains.

Parachains are customizable and operate independently, often focusing on a single use-case in web3. They are all connected to the Relay chain, allowing for shared security and interoperability.

Polkadot can support up to 100 parachains. Three of the largest parachains are Hydration, Moonbeam and Astar, while networks such as Phala and Frequency account for the highest extrinsics count.

Extrinsics are a form of transaction on the Polkadot network, and can be classified as signed transactions, unsigned transactions, or inherent transactions.

Hydration

Hydration, formerly known as HydraDX, is a liquidity-driven DeFi protocol and parachain. As of August, 2024, it boasts the highest TVL among Polkadot parachains.

The protocol offers lending and borrowing, a unique automated market maker (AMM) system called “omnipool”, and a decentralized stablecoin called HOLLAR.

Moonbeam

Moonbeam is an Ethereum-compatible smart contract platform that was the very first parachain to launch on Polkadot in January 2022.

Roughly 80% of Moonbeam TVL is accounted for by Moonwell, the chain's DeFi lending platform, while most of the rest is deposited on Moonbeam’s leading decentralized exchange (DEX), StellaSwap.

Astar

Astar network is a smart contract layer built on Polkadot that features 42 different DeFi protocols. Its liquid staking protocol, Algem, and leading DEX, ArthSwap make up over 90% of the chain’s locked funds.

Astar launched in February 2022 after winning parachain auction number 48 and witnessed parabolic growth reaching an all-time high TVL of $380 million in April 2022. Prior to its mainnet launch, the network raised $22 million in a round led by Polychain Capital

Frequency

Frequency is a social platform parachain, combining social media with dApp ecosystems through their Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP). The network prioritizes digital ownership of data, identity, and privacy, providing users with full control on the usage of their information.

Phala

Phala network is an AI and DePIN focused parachain, referred to as the “coprocessor for blockchains.” Phala provides computation and AI agent solutions for blockchain AI applications, and boasts AI Agent Contracts, which are a set of smart contracts that control the AI agents and task performance.
