Can LP Agents Outrun Their Own Debt? Inside Ratehopper's Self-Repaying Loan Competition

Most DeFi competitions reward trading skill. Range Hunter rewards something different, autonomous capital management.

Built by Ratehopper, Range Hunter is a 60-day onchain competition where users deploy self-repaying loan agents into live Uniswap V3 liquidity positions. The agents borrow against collateral, provide liquidity, collect trading fees, and work continuously toward repaying their own debt.

Participants don't actively trade after deployment. Instead, they compete on how efficiently their agent manages capital over a fixed 10-day period. The highest ranking agents share a $1000+ prize pool.

Concentrated Liquidity Is a Hard Position to Hold

Concentrated liquidity is the hardest position in DeFi to hold. Set your range too tight and price walks out of it and you stop earning. Set it too wide and your capital does nothing. Sit through a drawdown and impermanent loss quietly eats the position. Most LPs pick a range once, based on a rough feel for recent price action, and then leave it.

Ratehopper's LP agent is built to remove that decision. It reads implied volatility from Deribit options and realized volatility from onchain data, sizes a range, monitors it hourly, and steps out of the pool entirely when its exit signals say downside volatility is coming. Then it steps back in when the price has actually recovered, not just when volatility calms down.

The project's core offering covered a $100k ETH/USDC position from October 2025 to April 2026, a window that included a roughly 50% ETH drawdown. According to Ratehopper's published results, the agent returned +21.72% net. Simply holding ETH over the same period returned -50%. It collected $18k in real fees and stayed out of the pool during the most violent stretches, sitting in the position 68.5% of the time.

Those returns come from realized fees, not asset appreciation. That is the part that makes the self-repaying loan work at all.

How Range Hunter Works

Entering requires minting a Range Hunter NFT for 0.06 ETH, split two ways.

0.05 ETH becomes collateral inside a dedicated Safe wallet you control. 0.01 ETH goes directly into the prize pool. If you stake and lock 100,000 $ROO, that entry fee is waived on up to three mints and you only put up the collateral.

Staking pays on its own terms as well. Stake and lock 100,000 $ROO and your entry fee is waived on up to three mints.

At mint you choose a personality, from Plus at the conservative end through Medio and Alto to Max at the aggressive end. The choice sets how hard your agent borrows and how tightly it concentrates its range.

Once deployed, the agent borrows against the collateral, opens a Uniswap V3 liquidity position, collects trading fees, and applies the earnings toward its debt. After ten days it unwinds automatically, repays what remains, and returns the collateral to your Safe.

Participants should receive most of their collateral back after the position closes, but this is live capital and losses remain possible.

The Metric That Matters: Sniper Score

Agents are ranked using a proprietary metric called the Sniper Score, based on projected Time to Repay (TTR).

TTR estimates how long an agent would need to fully repay its outstanding debt at the pace it set over its ten-day deployment. A lower TTR reflects stronger fee generation, better range selection, and more efficient capital deployment. The leaderboard updates as agents run, so participants can compare strategies throughout the season.

Prize Pool

The Season 0 pool is funded by participant entries plus an additional $1,000 contribution from the protocol. It pays out to the top ten agents.

The rewards are distributed as follows:

  • 1st place: 40%
  • 2nd place: 20%
  • 3rd place: 15%
  • 4th–10th place: 15% shared equally
  • 10% allocated to the protocol reserve

Every Agent Is Different

Each Range Hunter NFT generates a unique strategy configuration when minted.

That includes variables such as:

  • loan-to-value ratio,
  • liquidity range parameters,
  • risk profile.

Those parameters are visible immediately after minting, so every strategy is transparent and no two agents are identical.

The competition isn't about entering first. Every agent runs independently for ten days, so participants can enter any time during the first twenty days of the season without being disadvantaged by timing. You can mint as many agents as you want, and each is a separate entry.

More Than a Competition

Range Hunter pays out to the top performers, but the broader purpose is to put Ratehopper's infrastructure in front of real markets.

The protocol is building autonomous self-repaying loan agents that monitor collateral health, manage liquidity positions, generate yield, and refinance debt across Aave, Compound, Morpho and Spark for the best available rate. The agent runs inside the user's own Safe, so custody never leaves.

The team came out of APY Vision, which tracked liquidity positions for more than 70,000 users across 11 chains. They have spent years measuring LP returns and impermanent loss. Range Hunter is the first time that execution layer runs in public, with real capital and a leaderboard nobody controls.

The question the season answers is a simple one. Can an agent borrow against collateral, work a liquidity range, and outrun its own debt better than the rest of the field?

Season 0 is live and entries close on day twenty.

Season 0 entry details are at ratehopper.ai/contest-onboarding. Staking earns 5% APY on a 60-day lock, and Defiant readers who enter the code ROO-DEFIANT get 8%. Lock 100,000 $ROO and your first three entries are fee-free.
