Daily volume dropped from $878 million on Jul. 11 to $241 million on Aug. 1 as transactions, deposits and stablecoin supply climbed to all-time highs. Volume per transaction fell 74%. More than 90% of the chain's incentive spending pays depositors.

Robinhood Chain's DEX Volume Fell 72% While Transactions And Deposits Set Records

Robinhood Chain's decentralized exchange volume fell 72.5% between its Jul. 11 peak and Aug. 1, but every other headline metric on the chain kept climbing through the drop.

While transactions, total value locked and stablecoin supply are all at record highs, the size of the average trade collapsed. The chain processes more activity worth less, and more than 90% of the incentives being paid on the network go to depositors.

Down Seventy-Two Percent

Volume peaked at about $878 million on Jul. 11, 10 days after the chain went live, according to DefiLlama. It bottomed at $241 million on Aug. 1. The seven-day average fell from $671 million in the week ending Jul. 14 to $356 million in the week ending Aug. 5, a 47% decline.

The drop is specific to Robinhood Chain rather than a market-wide move. DEX volume across all chains rose over the same stretch, from $5.27 billion on Jul. 11 to $7.33 billion on Aug. 5. Robinhood Chain's share of global DEX volume went from 16.65% at the peak to 4.32% on Aug. 2, per The Defiant's calculation from DefiLlama data.

Volume is showing signs of a recovery. The chain did $517 million on Aug. 5, and $665 million by 16:30 UTC on Aug. 6, an incomplete day.

Smaller Trades, More Of Them

The chain recorded 13.3 million transactions on Aug. 5, its highest ever and up from 10.4 million on the peak volume day, according to Blockscout. Total value locked hit a record $433 million on Aug. 6, up from $47 million on Jul. 8. Stablecoin supply hit a record $597 million.

Dividing volume by transactions gives the cleanest read on what changed. Each transaction on the chain corresponded to $105.56 of DEX volume on Jul. 13. By Aug. 4 that was $27.82, a 74% drop, before recovering to $39.07 on Aug. 5.

Paid To Park

Nineteen live incentive campaigns are running on Robinhood Chain, paying a combined $58,351 a day as of 17:40 UTC on Aug. 6, according to Merkl's API. Two of them account for $53,808 of that, or 92%.

Both pay depositors. The largest, at $29,514 a day, rewards users for depositing USDe as collateral in a Morpho market against USDG, and sits on $239 million. The second, at $24,294 a day and restricted to Robinhood users, pays for supplying to a Steakhouse USDG vault on Morpho holding $276 million.

The 11 campaigns aimed at trading liquidity split $4,543 a day between them. They pay Uniswap v4 pools that pair tokenized stocks with USDG and with each other, advertising annualized rates between 1,274% and 36,540% on pools holding between $358 and $20,510.

That split explains how deposits can set records while trading falls. The chain's total value locked is concentrated in lending — Morpho Blue and Steakhouse Financial vaults — rather than in DEX liquidity.

Martin Gaspar, senior crypto market strategist at FalconX, flagged the risk on Jul. 20, less than two weeks before the trough, writing that "the initial burst of activity may reflect hype over substance" and that volumes "could taper off if memecoin volumes decline." The same note cited Entropy Advisors data putting memecoins at around 75% of the chain's spot DEX volume at the time, down from 90% at launch.

The CASHCAT Correlation

CASHCAT, the memecoin named after Robinhood's original mascot, has moved with the chain's volume through both the fall and the bounce. The log of daily DEX volume and the log of CASHCAT's price carry a correlation of 0.63 across the 29 days from Jul. 8 to Aug. 5, per The Defiant's calculation from DefiLlama and CoinGecko data.

CASHCAT's record of $0.2288 came at 21:24 UTC on Jul. 11, the peak volume day. It bottomed at $0.036 on Jul. 28 and traded at $0.1115 at 17:45 UTC on Aug. 6, up 31.7% on the day and 178.3% over the week, with a $110.4 million market capitalization. The Defiant reported in July that the chain topped Solana in tokenized stock volume via memecoin pairs, and that it overtook Base on daily active users three weeks after launch on memecoin trading rather than the tokenized stock trading it was built for.

Uniswap Eats Uniswap

Uniswap runs about 91% of the chain's DEX volume. While Uniswap v2 and v3 volumes fell since Jul. 22, Uniswap’s v4 went the other way, and on Aug. 6 it passed v3 for the first time.

The v4 jump lines up with pools.trade, the launchpad Uniswap Labs opened on the chain on Aug. 5, which routes every token it creates directly into a v4 pool.

Tom Wan, head of data at Entropy Advisors, wrote that "Uniswap v4 daily trading volume on Robinhood Chain sat at ~$100M before Trade Pools; it hit $237M on launch day, roughly 2.4x," and read the product as "a strategic push to drive usage of Uniswap v4," since "most launchpads today graduate tokens into v3, while Trade Pools routes directly into v4."

Robinhood Chain launched its mainnet on Jul. 1, built on the Arbitrum stack. The Defiant covered the mainnet launch and the metrics surge as the network leaned into memecoins in its first week.
