Telegram Rolls Out Feature to Turn Digital Gifts into NFTs

Telegram plans to allow allows users to upgrade their digital gifts into non-fungible tokens (NFTs), according to a Jan. 1 update.
The new feature allows users to create and customize NFTs, which are one-of-a-kind digital assets stored on a blockchain, with distinct attributes. These unique collectibles can then be traded or auctioned on NFT marketplaces, the messaging platform detailed in a blog post.
This integration of blockchain technology into Telegram signals a broader trend toward incorporating decentralized assets into mainstream platforms, providing users with new ways to exchange and monetize digital items.
“When you upgrade a gift it unlocks a new appearance from dozens of custom variations made by Telegram artists,” the blog post reads. “Collectibles also receive a random set of secondary traits, including a background color, icon and number. This means every collectible gift is a unique work of art — and that some will be more rare than others.”
Telegram originally developed the TON blockchain, but it is now run by an independent community.
Other updates
Telegram introduced a handful of additional updates including enhanced Message Search Filters that enable users to refine search results by private chats, groups, or channels. Reactions are also now supported for service messages, such as gifts, new group members, or video chat notifications, allowing users to quickly respond with a tap.
Additionally, the messaging platform announced third-party verification that allows organizations and public figures to get verified. This includes extra icons added to accounts and chats for improved transparency.
“This decentralized platform for additional verification will help prevent scams and reduce misinformation — with a unique proactive solution that sets a new safety standard for social platforms,” Telegram’s blog post reads.
