📉Weekly Recap: Crypto Markets Hit Fresh 2024 Lows

The Defiant

Weekly Recap

Happy weekend Defiers!

Crypto markets continued their decline this week, making new lows for the year before paring some losses. Bitcoin traded as low as $38,600, while ETH briefly broke $2,200.

Despite the volatility, global crypto adoption is on the rise, with multiple reports showing impressive growth in 2023 in terms of overall users and onchain activity.

DeFi investors continue to increase their exposure to EigenLayer, with liquid restaking tokens like Ether.fi's eETH seeing a surge in TVL. Ether.fi has also launched 'deVamp' in a bid to gain market share.

Meanwhile, rollup provider AltLayer completed its highly anticipated airdrop. The token launch was not without controversy, however, as blockchain sleuths accused a team member of gaming the airdrop.

TrueUSD (TUSD) is sliding from its $1 peg while its market capitalization drops as speculation swirls that Tron founder Justin Sun is using it to cash out onto other cryptocurrencies.

In Ethereum news, fees generated by Layer 2 networks surged 400% in 2023. Also, the Foundation sold $1.6M of ETH this week.

On the Bitcoin front, developers are racing to bring EVM compatibility to the world's most valuable blockchain. Elastos unveiled 'Smart Inscriptions' on Thursday.

Finally, in this week's podcast, Tegan Kline was joined by Mustafa Al-Bassam, CEO and Co-Founder of Celestia Labs.

Today we're joined by Mustafa Al-Bassam, CEO and Co-Founder of Celestia Labs.

Celestia provides the ability to publish data and make sure that data is available. Celestia had what many are calling one of the best launches of 2023, and they are the first Data Availability Layer live today.

In our conversation we get into how Mustafa built Celestia, other Data Availability Layers in the space, how Celestia can be thought of as a bulletin board for computers with some cryptographic and economic assurances - computers posting info so everyone can see it.

Prior to Celestia, Mustafa was generally known for his expertise in ethical hacking. He hacked the US government at the age of 16 and was sentenced for it. We get into this and so much more, but first, Mustafa shares what he is focused on at Celestia today.
